An Addiction Recovery Media Empire

What It Is.

Since Right Now (aka Klēn&Sōbr aka The Recovery Revolution) has been a labor of love since 2014. I’ve poured all of my skills, expertise, insight, and experience into producing an ever-expanding collection of free recovery media by and for people in or seeking recovery and those who love them. And marketing it almost entirely via Social Media.

From 2014 through 2020, I was always adding something new to the mix: multi-author blog then the podcast then merch (store currently offline) then an online art gallery then comix then #AddictionFiction & publishing then /RecovRemix DJ series then a podcast network and the quarantine live stream. I’ve always believed that if one piece helps one person, It will be worth it.

Why It’s Here.

This is the definition of a passion project.

Self-funded with a lone full-time “employee” (it me!) this is a body of work — of which only a small fraction is presented here — that represents a deep and broad learning experience for me.

Through this work, I learned to …

  • develop + produce (co-host, engineer, book, etc.) podcasts,

  • curate, edit, art direct, + publish an online magazine,

  • publish + art direct a book,

  • produce a monthly DJ mix series,

  • iterate + test social media design + content across platforms,

  • and, as the saying goes, more.

So What?

  • Almost 1,000,000 plays of 235 podcast episodes.

  • Over 500 unique — global —visitors/day average from 2016-2018

  • Exponential Social Media growth year-over-year across multiple platforms.

  • Finalist / Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow Recognition 2019/2020

  • Top 12 Recovery Sites / The Fix

  • 20 Best Recovery Blogs / AfterParty Magazine

  • 30 Recovery Sites You Absolutely Must Follow / Ocean Recovery Centre (UK)

  • “You’re helping people and saving lives!” — Fan Mail

So. Much. Content.

Despite no updates since late 2019, the site continues to draw dozens of visitors each day.

And the podcast, though currently on hiatus, is closing is closing in on 600,000 DLs, with hundreds of monthly listeners and new fans finding us all the time.

Below is just a small selection of highlights from over the years.

Socially Awkward

SRN covers (and, for no good reason, the episode numbering system) evolved by season. I’ve had over 200 opportunities to visually suggest what listeners might expect.

Check out most of the covers, as well as a wide variety of social media content, on Instagram.

Getting by on Our Own Supply

While the shop may be shuttered, here’s a selection of fans wearing their hearts on their sleeves and our logos on their chests. Like … literally.

This represents just a very small selection of the swag we offered. (FFS, we had throw pillows!) The gentledude with the ink is one of a handful that put their skin in the game.

/RecovReMix™

A monthly mix series featuring DJs in recovery (both Pro and Am) ran for two years with Alan B now of Global Grooves Radio ultimately becoming the house DJ for the bulk of year two.

This mix by Nfyrno, a young First Nations woman in recovery — who had already quit her successful international DJ career — was one of the earliest and, for reasons both musical and personal, my favorite.

Though I’ve Never Done This Before is currently out of print, we are working on getting the presses rolling again, so to speak. I’ve been extremely gratified that Claire has since gone on to write what O: The Oprah Magazine called “… one of the best LGBTQ books of 2019,” Shine of the Ever.

And, I Had Never Done This Before

After having curated a section of what I’d dubbed #addictionfiction on Since Right Now, I decided to take the leap into publishing and learned exactly how challenging — and rewarding! — publishing can be.

Despite being somewhat of a publishing novice, I was compelled to put out this vivid, gritty collection of short stories that investigate the effects of addiction on a diverse cast of characters. I’ve Never Done This Before was the first book by Claire Rudy Foster and it was an honor to be entrusted to not only publish but to art direct the book.

A limited edition of fifty had duct tape hand-applied to blank covers and were then hand-lettered.

An exceptionally talented artist in recovery, and friend to both Claire and me, Aaron Lee Perry (R.I.P), was contracted to do original ink drawings to accompany each of the short stories.

May Cause Mild Discomfort™

I did it because I could, from 2014 through 2020 I did not leave the branding alone.

In response to audience metrics and demographics for both the site and the podcast — and my own unconstrained whims — I iterated almost constantly on the name, the mark, the logotype, the typography, the imagery, and the palette. And that’s saying nothing of our neverending stream of official taglines.

It was an opportunity to experiment with the aesthetic and voice of a brand to find the sweet spot between how I envisioned it and how the audience received it.

Much like recovery, I was working towards the brand’s best version of itself.
